Ashtanga is the most ancient form of Yoga that focuses on movement and breath to a very disciplined degree. The psychological and mental benefits are notable even after one yoga session…

From academia to the clinical world and entrepreneurial space, I have pushed myself in every area of my life, despite my rollercoaster of a journey with Lupus. I have a lot of people in my life to thank for their support, but Ashtanga Yoga is truly what has gotten me out of my head, through my limiting beliefs and victim mindset, so that I could rise above the difficult times.

Dive into the world of Ashtanga Yoga with me, an age-old journey woven through the 8 Limbs of Yoga that have totally changed my life. It's more than just a workout; it's a silent, meditative voyage from the chaos of our minds into the sanctity of our bodies. I've felt my own focus and awareness sharpen, and a kind of peace settle in that's hard to explain until you feel it for yourself.

If you need to get out of your head and into the present moment, Ashtanga is for you. During this episode, I go into the history of this ancient practice as well as the benefits for your wellbeing. After listening, you’ll discover:
🌿 What Ashtanga Yoga really is and where it comes from
🌿 What this ancient practice can do for your mental and physical well-being
🌿 Ways you can start practicing, whether you are an advanced yogi or beginner

Lately, we have been discussing issues around hormones, the impact of stress, and the intertwined effects they have on our mental and physical well-being. Reflecting on this, I'm drawn to revisit a past episode that stirred up a lot of questions.

How to ACTUALLY Balance Your Hormones...Without Toxic Medications

Many of you expressed curiosity about the concept of "regulating your hormones," particularly when it comes to introducing medications into the mix. Year after year, I've witnessed an increasing number of women searching for holistic approaches to address hormonal imbalances that they are experiencing, whether it's the mood swings, the unwanted weight or the decreased libido.

Here's the truth: because all our hormones are interconnected and communicate with each other, it's not effective to address just ONE hormone. So how can we address and balance all hormones in the body? By balancing our chakra system.

In this episode, you'll discover:

🧘 How our ENERGY influences our body function, and why Western Medicine labs can be unreliable as a result
🧘 The faulty effects of hormone medication on our gland function and hormone production
🧘 The 7 chakras in the body, the hormones they are associated with, and the impact of chakra imbalance on our hormones
🧘 How to use Yoga and meditation as a tool for balancing chakras so that you can naturally balance hormones to get rid of unwanted symptoms

In the latest episode of Mind Your Health, I dive into the sensitive topic of stress eating, a behavior many of us might be all too familiar with. Have you ever stopped to wonder what triggers this? Or the toll it might be taking on your mental and physical health? As a registered dietitian, I have seen the ups and downs of what a diet focused culture can bring about in women.

This is an issue that's become increasingly pervasive in our modern society: the stress induced by dieting and societal expectations around eating and body image. Stress eating has a relationship with our hormones, mental health, digetsive system and nervous system. This means that weight gain, GI issues, mood and metabolism are all related.

Dieting, often brought about by societal pressures to look a certain way, can inadvertently lead to stress eating. When people, most commonly women, feel constrained by rigid dietary rules or the constant scrutiny of societal standards, they may find solace in food as a coping mechanism. The irony is that the very act of dieting, meant to control or reduce weight, can trigger the counterproductive behavior of emotional eating.

We are living through the societal lens of eating 'right' with looking 'right.' When we are continually trying to meet these external standards, the joy of eating is overshadowed by guilt, anxiety, and judgment.

It seems like “intuitive eating” has become somewhat of a buzz phrase, but what does it mean? Let’s tune into what it means to be present and listen to our body's cues… this is how we can foster a healthier relationship with food, free from the chains of societal expectations. Embracing food as nourishment and not an enemy can change the dynamic of eating from stressful to joy.

There is so much to unpack here. In this episode, you’ll discover:
👉🏼 Where stress eating can come from
👉🏼 How overeating affects your body and mind
👉🏼 Tips on how to create a loving relationship with food
👉🏼 What eating in a state of gratitude really means

Stress has profound impacts on our self-confidence. But why does this occur? At the heart of this lies our "monkey brain" – a primal part of our cognitive function that's wired for survival and riddled with anxiety. When under stress, our brain instinctively triggers the 'fight or flight' response, which redirects oxygen and energy to our limbs, preparing us for quick action. While this may have been crucial for our ancestors when facing predators, in today's world, it hampers our ability to think clearly, make confident decisions, and show up as our most authentic selves.

In our current day to day, our stressors look more like being on time, managing our kids and being in traffic. When we are in this state, essential systems like our digestive organs and even our brain don't receive the necessary oxygen for optimal function. This physiological shift not only clouds judgment but also erodes our self-assurance because we simply can't think clearly.

So, how do we break free from this cycle? The answer lies in mindfulness. By being acutely aware of our values and monitoring our thoughts, we can slowly train our brain to respond differently.

In this episode, you will discover:

🌟How lack of confidence can affect your daily life
🌟Where unexpected stress can come from
🌟Practical tips you can use TODAY to begin to alleviate your stress.

In today's episode of The Mind Your Health Podcast, I am getting into a topic that affects us every second of every day: breathing. We breathe in; we breathe out. But... have you ever stopped to consider the physiological effects that breathing has on our bodies, especially when it comes to stress?

Breath is power. It's not just the process of taking in oxygen and releasing carbon dioxide. Breathing can get us both in and out of fight or flight mode. Deep, conscious breathing can stimulate a calming domino effect in our bodies, helping to counterbalance stress and evoke calmness.

When we breathe deeper, more oxygen in our blood translates to improved cell function, enhanced thinking and focus, and better energy metabolism. By optimizing oxygen levels, we equip our bodies to better combat the wear and tear of daily stressors.

I hope this episode WAKES YOU UP and helps you realize the power of breath. In the next 15 minutes, you'll discover...

🌿 What body mechanics are affected by our breath
🌿 How intentional breathing can calm us down and reduce stress
🌿 2 different breathing techniques that you can do AT ANY TIME to start regulating your nervous system

Symptoms like persistent fatigue, mood swings, sleep irregularities, and even digestive troubles are what we can define as adrenal fatigue… sound familiar?

Adrenal fatigue is a term that's gained momentum in the functional medicine space, but what does it really mean for our day-to-day existence?

At the core of our body's stress response lies the adrenal glands. When persistently taxed, they can lead to what's popularly termed 'adrenal fatigue', impacting everything from our energy levels to our mood, hormones and even our metabolism.

Today we are talking about how everyday challenges, from work stressors to personal upheavals, can drain us, pushing our adrenals to continuously pump out stress hormones. Over time, this consistent demand can wear them out, leading to a hormonal imbalance that affects every aspect of our health and life.

But here's the silver lining: there are natural paths to rebalancing our hormones and rejuvenating our adrenals.

Tune in to this episode, where I dive deeper into the mysteries of adrenal fatigue, uncover its effects on our daily routines, and explore what you can do TODAY to begin mending your overworked adrenal glands.

In this episode, you will discover…

👉🏼 What adrenal fatigue REALLY is
👉🏼 How adrenal fatigue affects almost every aspect of your life
👉🏼 How to naturally begin to heal your adrenal fatigue

In today’s episode, we are tying in two important previous episodes together (linked below) to understand just how CHAKRAS, HORMONES and YOGA connect. In the complex network of our bodies, every cell plays a role, and each function has its importance.

Chakras are like energy hubs located along our spine, helping us understand our overall well-being. Each chakra, from our lower back up to the top of our head, connects to particular glands in our body. That's where chakras and hormones come together.

So, where does Yoga fit into this? Yoga and breathing techniques are designed not just for physical flexibility and movement,  but for energetic realignment. When we engage in specific yoga poses targeting a certain chakra, we stimulate the associated gland. Each gland corresponds to a specific hormone and physical, emotional and spiritual symptom.

In this episode, you will learn…

🧘🏻 Which hormone and gland correlates with each specific Chakra
🧘🏻 The symptoms associated with each unbalanced Chakra
🧘  How Yoga can rebalance your energy centers

Today, we're diving deep into the idea that real-world experience often outweighs any formal certificate hanging on your wall. It's not just about what you know, but how you apply that knowledge in tangible ways.

Knowledge, in its purest form, is what fills textbooks and lectures, and is often seen as the foundation of education. However, having knowledge doesn't necessarily mean you can use it effectively in real-world situations. Applied knowledge, on the other hand, is the ability to take what you know and use it in practical contexts.

It’s the bridge between theory and action. While knowledge is knowing that a tomato is a fruit, applied knowledge is using that tomato appropriately in a recipe, demonstrating that understanding something and effectively using it are two very different skills and it’s the KEY component to growing in your personal and professional life.

In this episode, you will discover…

🌿 Why my years of academic experience couldn’t teach me how to be a practitioner
🌿 What applied knowledge is and how to use it in your day to day
🌿 The power of personal experience
🌿 How to use applied knowledge to adapt and grow
🌿 The connection between applied knowledge and Yoga

Our subconscious mind plays a significant role in our daily decision-making process. It encompasses thoughts, beliefs, and emotions that operate beneath the surface of our conscious awareness. In this episode, you will discover:

🌿 The influence of the subconscious mind in our everyday life, and the reason we tend to fall back into old patterns and habits
🌿 How Yoga can change our subconscious patterns
🌿 How to use the subconscious mind to overcome limiting beliefs that may be preventing you from achieving the health you desire to have

When we think of Yoga, we find ourselves thinking about the workout, maybe even the serenity it gave us for an hour or so. There is so much more that Yoga can offer. Yoga benefits our body and mind in many ways that we might not even realize what’s happening inside of our body when we practice.

There is a deep connection between our physiology, nervous system and mind that is heavily influenced by our breath and movement with Yoga. This happens when we practice properly and by not over exerting ourselves because we think that a Yoga pose has to look a certain way. Tapping into this connection occurs when we fully align during our practice, by rebalancing our chakras and intentionally moving, breathing and challenging ourselves.

In this episode, you’ll discover:
🌿 The neurological connection between our skeletal system and mind, and how Yoga promotes this connection for optimal wellbeing
🌿 How chakras relate to our glands, and how we can improve our wellbeing by balancing our chakras
🌿 What the 8 Limbs of Yoga are and why it is important to understand them when practicing yoga
🌿 How nutrition plays a role in our yoga practice and our day to day mindfulness

Understanding just how our physical being impacts our energy, hormones and mental health is a part of practicing Yoga intentionally.

This episode of the Mind Your Health Show is Part 1 of a two part series!

The aim of Functional Yoga Medicine™ is to integrate the best practices of Eastern and Western Medicine to provide you with a complete and holistic approach to your healing so that you can effectively get rid of unwanted symptoms.

Hormones are chemical messengers in the body that communicate with one another and command our organs and body systems to function. But our hormones are heavily influenced by our energy or state of being.

When something feels off, Western Medicine doctors can test our hormones, but they typically only test and address singular hormones, then prescribe medication for one hormone. Not to mention, these lab results can change dramatically at any moment, depending on our state of being.

But here's the truth: because all our hormones are interconnected and communicate with each other, it's not effective to address just ONE hormone. So how can we address and balance all hormones in the body? By balancing our chakra system.

Chakras, a foundational pillar of Eastern Medicine philosophy, are vortexes of energy in the body that correspond to and influence specific glands and hormones. Unless we address our state of being and balance the energy of our chakras, our hormones stand no chance at achieving balance.

Most of my patients come to me with mysterious symptoms that their doctors just can't seem to figure out. Despite their normal lab results, many of them struggle with chronic fatigue, aches and pains, digestive discomfort issues, weight gain, and sleep problems on a daily basis.

They start to question what's wrong with them, as their doctors can't do much other than prescribe medications. They try to change their diet, exercise more, and take supplements, but nothing seems to help.

The one commonality I've found with all my patients is elevated STRESS levels. So in this episode of the Mind Your Health podcast, I want to dive into the topic of stress and cortisol (the body's main stress hormone), and its impact on all other hormones in the body, which simply put, are chemical messengers in the body that signal our organs to function properly.

Without proper hormone regulation and function, our bodies can't do what they're supposed to do, which leads to undesirable symptoms that interfere with our day to day life.

In this episode, you'll discover:
📌The impact of stress on your physical health and body, and a hidden type of stress that we tend to dismiss or ignore
📌How your HPA axis (controlled by your nervous system) works when you experience stress to impact your digestion, immune system, mood and emotions, and metabolism
📌Signs and symptoms of a dysregulated, stressed-out nervous system
📌An effective tool you can use to start to regulate your nervous system to balance your hormones so that you can get rid of your unwanted symptoms

In the last episode of the Mind Your Health Podcast, Dr. Connie discussed the importance of mindfulness and awareness when it comes to eating for gut healing.

If you haven't listened to last week's episode yet, you can listen by clicking here: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/ep-311-why-following-somebody-elses-diet-plan-will/id1297924924?i=1000616939894

Meditation is an excellent way to cultivate mindfulness and awareness by helping you tune inwards so that your mind can "occupy" your body.

In today's busy world where there's so much fighting for our attention, many of us tend to be "stuck" in our heads. When this happens, we completely ignore the signals and sensations our bodies are constantly sending us about what it needs, and instead we look to everyone else to tell us what to eat – doctors, dietitians, the internet, influencers on social media, etc.

Not only that, but dieting in itself is stressful! This stress puts your body in "fight or flight" mode, but our bodies need to be in "rest and digest" mode for optimal digestion, absorption, detoxification, and elimination.

In this episode, Dr. Connie will take you through a guided meditation to help you cultivate body awareness and shift your energy to promote optimal digestion and gut function.

When it comes to diet and nutrition, we are conditioned to look to everyone else for answers, believing somebody other than ourselves holds the key to our health. This includes our doctors, a dietitian, the internet/social media, or even a close friend or family member who had success with a particular diet.

The truth is that we cannot change that which we're not aware of. And continuing to look for nutrition advice outside of yourself means that you continue to ignore the messages and signals your body sends you about what it needs.

In this episode, Dr. Connie shares how yoga and meditation can help you learn how to read your body signals and sensations to figure out which foods are best for YOUR body.

By listening to this episode, you'll discover...

✨ The importance of mindfulness when eating

✨ The role of yoga and meditation in helping you cultivate self awareness and body awareness, as well as helping you recognize physical symptoms and body sensations attached to your diet

✨ Additional benefits of yoga and meditation on gut health, including stress management, enhanced digestive function, and improved gut muscle contraction

As mentioned in previous episodes, there's a misconception that healing your gut and getting rid of uncomfortable digestive discomfort requires you to restrict what you eat and eliminate certain foods from your diet completely.

I want to introduce you to the concept of intuitive eating! It's a way of eating that rejects "diet" mentality and allows you to truly enjoy food without guilt, shame, or stress.

Those familiar with Yoga know that it is excellent for mental wellbeing because of the meditative nature of the practice. But did you know that Yoga is also phenomenal for GUT health because of that same reason?

Your gut has its very own nervous system known as the enteric nervous system, which is in direct communication with your central nervous system (your brain). This means there is a strong connection between the gut and the brain. Learning how to tap into this connection is the key to shifting your body into a REST AND DIGEST state so that you can eliminate unwanted symptoms, such as bloating, gas, constipation, fatigue, etc.

In this episode all about Yoga and Gut Health, you'll discover...
🍃The power and function of the vagus nerve, which is how the gut and brain communicate with one another
🍃How Yoga is a powerful practice that stimulates the vagus nerve, resulting in enhanced digestion and decreased inflammation
🍃Specific poses and breath techniques that you can incorporate in your daily routine to stimulate your vagus nerve for optimal gut-brain connection, resulting in improved gut health

Check out my latest Youtube video where I walk you through these specific poses so that you can do them right away to start to feel the results! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Nr8pkNW2lr8&t=664s

And if you want to learn more about Yoga for Gut Health, it's not too late to sign up for my FREE 3-Part Heal Your Gut Training, where you'll learn more about the power of Yoga so that you can heal your gut and get rid of your symptoms...without diets and supplements!
